I have just installed and tried Photoshare - excellent and so easy to use!
I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to this though, so which is better? To store the images in files in a directory or in the database?

What is better depends on your ISP (internet service provider) settings. If you have lots of discspace but not so much database, then put the images on disc - and vice versa.
Having images in the database makes backup easier since you don't have to ensure the disc and database is in sync.
There's probably also some performance difference but I haven't done any research in that area.

Does the choice of database versus disk have anything to do with safe mode restrictions? And do you have a sense for which you regard as superior, all other things being equal?

So far I won't promote one over the other. It depends on your setup. It has nothing to do with your safe_mode settings (you still have to supply a tmp directory even though you use the database).
