i am using internet explorer and netscape on mac.

i set a field to html, but when trying to add a new publication, the filed is just a text area. i don't see the WYSIWYG editor.

does this only work in windows? how can i use html?

The editor only works on IE/Win (it's actually a built-in feature of the browser). You should be able to enter any HTML you want in Netscape (except that apparently the textarea is too small).

the htmlArea WYSIWYG editor works with mozilla only since mozilla 1.3.1.
mozilla stopped publishing mac os 9 binarys since mozilla version 1.3. the last netscape release for mac os 9 is based on mozilla 1.3.
so it will not work for mac os9 (but for os X with a newer mozilla/netscape version)

BUT there is an mozilla 1.3.1 port for mac os 9 out there - with this browser htmlAREA will work on mac os 9. you can download it here: http://wamcom.org/latest-131/

That would be rather cool. But I think that requires a beta or release candidate of htmlArea which is not part of Pagesetter.
