Stats module stopped working

After installing Photoshare the Stats module (from 0.721 installation) stopped counting visits! It is reported to be a bug in the Stats module but I decided to post it here anyway (if all users are given EDIT rigths Stats stops counting).
What's more dangerous, I changed the user permissions for Photoshare to "read" (to reactivate Stats) and I could not access the site admin area!
The only choice to admin my site and have the Stats running OK was to give each user edit permissions separately (and believe me: accessing the admin area to change the permissions was quite tricky keeping in mind I could not access it as usual via admin.php).
