OpenID is a single sign-on system, which allows internet users to log on to many different web sites using a single digital identity, eliminating the need for a different user name and password for each site. OpenID is a decentralized, free and open standard that lets users control the amount of personal information they provide.
Your digital identity is represented by a normal URL like any other URL you use when browsing the Internet. This URL can be your homepage or blog, or it can be provided to you by a web site you use. In either case, you only have to sign in once to your OpenID provider and so you only need to maintain a single password.

You can register your OpenID with your existing user account or use OpenID to register for a new account. In both cases, you will be able to sign in using your OpenID provider. If you register with your OpenID, you can also pre-fill your registration information from your OpenID provider.
You can find more about OpenID on openid.net.
